Call for Marco Polo funding was published on 9 February

The application period for presenting proposals will close on 8 May 2009.

During the “Marco Polo European Info Day,” organised by the (Executive Agency for Competitiveness and Innovation), in Brussels on 4 February the funding programme for 2009 was presented.

Funding is available for any one of the following five key actions: catalyst actions, motorways of the sea, modal shift, traffic avoidance and common learning. A key novelty for the 2009 call is the improvement in the subsidy for modal shift within motorways of the sea and traffic avoidance actions, which will double from 1 € to 2 € per 500 tonne-kilometres shifted.

Those present were also informed of the progress of three ongoing projects that had received funding in previous calls, two based on motorways of the sea, and the other on modal shift.

Results of 2008 calls can be seen in the following data:

• Proposals received: 46
• Funds needed: 73M€
• Proposals selected for negotiation: 31
• Funding awarded: 28
• Subsidy required for projects in negotiation phase: 37M€
• Budget available: 59M€

The majority of the proposals presented, that is 76%, were made for modal shift actions, 4% of which were for motorways of the sea.
