Goods traffic at the Port of Bilbao amounted to 39.3 million tonnes in 2008, which was a slight 1.5% decrease. The crisis neither affected container traffic nor liquid bulks, which grew 4% and 2% respectively.
With regard to markets, the European Atlantic is still the origin or destination of almost half our traffics, which yet again, endorses the weight of Short Sea Shipping in the Port of Bilbao. The main market in deep sea is Asia, with 15% traffic, followed by North America with 10% and Africa with 9%.
With a view to adapting to the present economic situation, and to helping the Port’s customers, the Port Authority, has on the one hand, decided to reduce port vessel, goods and passage charges by 3.1% for 2009. On the other, payment of occupation rate has been delayed.
Finally, this year, the Port will make the second greatest investment in its history – 54.4 million euros – on building two new docks as part of the third phase of the Port Extension in the Outer Abra.
