Last week, the Port Authority of Bilbao attended the European Cruise Council 2009 Conference in Rome. According to the report carried out by the European Cruise Council (ECC), in 2008, cruises in Europe generated 32,000 million euros in goods and services. In the last three years, the total value generated by the sector has grown by 69%.
In an economic context like the present one, where the majority of sectors are losing jobs, the cruise sector has proved invaluable as a source of job creation. Thus, in 2008, this industry generated 311,512 work posts in all, 22,397 of which were in Spain. In the previous year, the sector employed 18,977 people, which mean san 18% increase. These figures show that the cruise sector still plays a predominant role in the European economy.
